About Us

In April 2012, Baraka Opera Productions(BOP) as it was first called, staged its first Kenyan opera, Ondieki the Fisherman, composed by Francis W. Chandler. The goal was to impact audiences and grow receptivity to African themed opera music in Kenya and beyond. In 2014 , BOP was officially registered as a non-profit organisation and renamed Baraka Opera Trust.(BOT). In the 10 years since, it has been an umbrella for community initiatives such as school concert tours, a Boys` choral movement, masterclasses and workshops for singers, conductors, educators and composers.

In 2023, marking the trust’s 10th anniversary of bringing world-class opera to audiences in Kenya, Baraka Opera Trust took on the flagship name of Baraka Opera Kenya (BOK). The opera company will continue reflecting its commitment to reaching audiences across the country and inspiring a new generation of talented composers, librettists, musicians, artists and opera lovers.  We look forward to seeing more and more people accepting theatre music in the form of opera, and we are committed to demystifying the stereotypes associated with this art form, as we endevour to connect human beings all over the world with stories of hope and humanity.
